Will I have to pay child support for all her children?

Anonymous Asked:

hello, I married a woman because I was trying to do the right thing for myself and god. We have a child together, and she has 3 other kids fathered by 3 other men. Shortly after our wedding she is abusive verbally and we rarely have sex, 7.5 months later the marriage has broken down and now she says I have to pay child support for all 4 children! Is this true, will I have to pay child support for all her children? If so will it be for the next 20 years? I feel entrapped.

It is a complicated issue which requires far more information – I would recommend that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. You will clearly have to pay child support for your own biological child. If you did not contribute to the financial support of her other 3 children for at least one year and if she did not bring an application seeking that you pay child support for those children within one year of the separation, then: No, you do not have any obligation to support her 3 children. If however you did contribute to the support of one or more of your step children for at least one year or more and she did apply for support within one year of your last financial contribution then: Yes, you may be ordered to pay support for any such children, though your obligation is secondary to the primary obligation of each child’s biological father – and the amount & duration of your support obligation will likely be less than the table amount indicated in the guidelines.
