Custody is evaluated based on several considerations including child care and what is in the best interest of the children. Financial considerations are usually secondary considerations insofar as both parents have mutual responsibility towards the financial well-being of the children, the whole guided by each parties' individual capacity to provide for the children.

The government might increase some benefits once you are divorced but only insofar as your family revenue will have decreased and not because you are divorced.

Finally, if you have been the primary caregiver for the children then it is quite probable that you can obtain either sole or joint custody of the children. A more thorough evaluation of your case would have to be done to see how this could be operated post-divorce.
