Answer: Any person wishing to obtain a divorce must have the divorce Application personally served unless a Judge first allows either substituted service (serving it on someone who likely knows how to reach him), or the dispensing of service (no service at all). If we first try to find him, with reasonable efforts, and cannot, then we can almost certainly obtain the necessary Order from a Judge, as long as the only claim is a divorce. There are companies that charge a small fee to find a person, and no charge at all if they cannot.
