What is considered to be an important decision in child custody? For example, is making an appointment for a child's routine dental check-up an, "important decision"?

Based on your question I assume that you either have a Separation Agreement or a Court Order. If so, I would need to read it in order to properly interpret it for you.

Generally speaking if parties have joint custody then they must make important decisions together in the best interest of the child. That includes, normally: religion, education and healthcare.
