Married in Mexico, Marriage Status unknown

My spouse and I were married in Mexico less then 3 years ago in a religious ceremony only in the Catholic Church. We are in the process of separating. A civil ceremony was NOT conducted in Mexico or Ontario. A marriage license was NOT obtained in either country.
My understanding of law in Mexico is that religious ceremonies alone are not valid within the country. No registration was performed once returning to Canada. Are we legally married? How do we formally document the end of our marriage?

To be sure you may want to contact the Thunder Bay records office to obtain a letter of whether anything is registered, however it appears that the marriage was never solemnized. You do not have a legally recognized marriage in Mexico, because only civil ceremonies are recognized. It appears that you are not legally married and therefore do not need a formal document to end the marriage. The marriage in Mexico cannot be legally recognized in Ontario because the marriage was not in compliance with the legal requirements in Mexico.
