I was wondering if Hiring a Private Investigator to follow my ex for a custody case and gather information to prove he's not the "model" parent and person he says he is would be something I could use in the custody case for my son and where I could find info on what the limitations might be.

You are entitled to hire a licensed private investigator to obtain information on your husband that might possibly be relevant in terms of custody and access. The legal test for custody and access is the best interest of the child. Whether such information would actually be helpful depends on your unique facts.
