I will like to go back to where we contracted our marriage to get the divorce but I want to know if a divorce certificate from another country is accepted in Canada.

Canadian law ordinarily recognizes a “foreign divorce” if one or both of the persons ordinarily resided in the foreign jurisdiction where the divorce was commenced at least one year prior to the commencement of that divorce Application. In short, Canadian law requires a genuine connection at the time that the divorce Application is commenced. Thus, if you have now both lived in Canada for about five years it is safer for you to commence the divorce in Canada; otherwise if you seek to get remarried in Canada you may not be able to obtain a marriage license.
