What can I take with me when I leave the house, after the legal paperwork has been submitted? With no settlement being reached.
I will be getting a place to stay for myself. Just my clothing and toiletries?

Before leaving the house, you may wish to prepare two lists, each of roughly equal value. You can present the list to the other spouse and the other spouse may decide which list they want. There would be an incentive in drafting the lists to fairly and equitably divide things. Another method could be to prepare one master list and take turns going back and forth until all of the personal property is divided. You could also arrange to have the matter decided by an arbitrator. You would pay the arbitrator, usually a lawyer, to listen to both sides and make a decision on the division of contents. Upon leaving the house, you may take all of your personal belongings and any property which you solely own, subject of course to first determining how to best approach the division of contents issue.
