A Family Lawyer

The foreign divorce must be legally recognized in Canada. The process to do that is to consult with a lawyer and provide copies of the same materials filed when obtaining the divorce in Nigeria. The law in Canada will recognize a foreign divorce provided that the marriage was valid, including, in accordance with the customary practices and laws in that country, and also that the divorce was legal. You would want to provide your lawyer with full account of information in relation to the marriage in Nigeria, including, the marriage certificate, and copies of the divorce materials including proof of service and certified copy of the divorce order, as well as a certificate from someone who has provided an interpretation. However, it is quite possible for the divorce to be recognized in Canada, and you would want to seek out a lawyer who is prepared to writing a letter of opinion in that regard.
