I had an emotional affair. Will I get nothing?

Anonymous Asked:

I've been married to for 4 years (together for 8 years). I had an emotional affair after years of emotional abuse. I suffer from crippling anxiety, so I never had a job. I was told that my emotional affair and my lack of a job would leave me with nothing, on top of us not being married for very long. Is this true? I'm not on any bank account, so I will be starting over with virtually nothing. Will I get nothing? Thank you for any information.

Divorce rulings in Canada are based on no-fault principles. Your past employments and possible affairs have no bearing per se on the outcome of the divorce and financial redistribution following the separation.

Your psychological state can be important however for maintenance purposes. I would recommend you explore this aspect with a lawyer and would encourage you to consult the information capsules on this web site for more information.
